A free geo grid rank tracker for Google Maps
Checking a Google Maps ranking from one spot tells you almost nothing. Google ranks local results partly by how close each place is to the person searching, so the same business can hold the top spot outside its door and drop out of the top 20 a few streets away. A geo grid runs the search from many points at once and shows where the business wins and where it disappears.
This checker centers a 3x3 grid on the business's own map pin, searches your keyword from each point, and colors every cell by rank. You also get the average rank where it shows up and the share of the grid where it makes the top 3, the two numbers most local SEO reports lead with. Use it to audit a prospect before a sales call, check a new client's starting point, or see whether a listing change moved anything.
It runs on the geo-grid endpoint of the Google Maps API, which also returns 5x5 and 7x7 grids at 1 credit per point. Run it daily through the API for every client and keyword you track and chart the trend in your own reports.
How to check local rankings with a geo grid
- 1
Enter the business
Type the business name and its city, or paste its Google Maps link or Place ID. The checker finds the listing and uses its map pin as the center of the grid.
- 2
Pick the keyword and spacing
Enter the search a customer would type, like dentist or emergency plumber, and choose how far apart the grid points sit: 0.5, 1, 2 or 5 km.
- 3
Read the grid
Each cell is the business's Google Maps rank when someone searches from that point. Green is the top 3, amber 4 to 10, red 11 to 20, and grey means it is not in the top 20.
The same grid from the API
One request returns the rank at every point plus a summary. This is a real response for “pizza” around Joe's Pizza on Broadway, trimmed to the first two of nine points.

Frequently asked questions
What is a local rank grid?+
A local rank grid, also called a geo grid, runs the same Google Maps search from a set of points laid out around a business and records where the business ranks at each one. Google Maps ranks places partly by distance from the searcher, so a business can be first on its own street and missing a mile away. The grid shows that spread in one picture.
How does this checker work?+
It finds the business on Google Maps, centers a 3x3 grid on its pin, and searches your keyword from all 9 points. At each point it looks for the business in the top 20 places and records its position. You get the 9 ranks, the average rank where it appears, the share of points where it is in the top 3, and its best and worst rank.
Is it free?+
Yes. You get 5 free grid checks a day, no account. For more checks or bigger grids, get an API key: 50 free credits on signup, no card required.
What do the colors and 20+ mean?+
Green cells are ranks 1 to 3, the places shown in the local pack. Amber is 4 to 10 and red is 11 to 20. Google Maps returns 20 places per search, so 20+ means the business was not in the top 20 from that point.
Which spacing should I choose?+
Match it to how far customers travel. A coffee shop or dentist in a dense city usually competes within a kilometer, so 0.5 or 1 km spacing shows the detail. A plumber or roofer serving a metro area is better checked at 2 or 5 km. The map zoom follows the spacing, so tight grids look at a tight map.
Can I run a 5x5 or 7x7 grid?+
Yes, through the API. The geo-grid endpoint takes grid_size 3, 5 or 7 and costs 1 credit per grid point, so a 5x5 is 25 credits and a 7x7 is 49. Points that return no data are not charged. The Project plan, $24 a month billed yearly, includes 7,000 credits, enough for 280 5x5 grids a month.
Can I track rankings over time?+
This page is a one-off check. To track a business, run the same grid daily or weekly through the API from a cron job, n8n, Make or Zapier, store each run, and chart the average rank and top-3 share over time.
Why does the result show a different location of the business?+
When you type a name and city, the checker picks the first Google Maps listing whose name matches. Chains and multi-location practices can have several listings in one city. If it picked the wrong one, paste that location's Google Maps link or Place ID instead.
Can I export the grid?+
There is no file export on this page. The full JSON, with the latitude, longitude and rank of every point plus the summary, is available via the API, ready for a spreadsheet, a database or a client report.
Can I use this in my own code?+
Yes. POST /api/v2/google/maps/geo-grid with query, target_place_id (or target_name), center { lat, lng }, grid_size and radius_km. The response has data.grid, one entry per point with lat, lng, rank and found, and data.summary with avg_rank, best_rank, worst_rank and found_share.

Track local rankings with the Google Maps API
This tool is two calls on the Scavio API. Run 3x3, 5x5 or 7x7 geo grids, look up places and pull reviews from one API key, on a schedule from your own reports and agents.
