Definition
A quantitative framework for measuring how often and how prominently a brand, product, or domain appears in AI-generated search results (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity), expressed as a composite score incorporating citation frequency, position, and context.
In Depth
GEO visibility scoring adapts traditional SEO visibility metrics for the AI search era. Where SEO visibility scores aggregate keyword rankings weighted by search volume, GEO scores aggregate AI citation presence weighted by query importance. Scoring components: (1) Citation frequency -- what percentage of target queries result in your content being cited in the AI response. Raw metric: citations / total queries. Example: cited in 15 out of 100 target queries = 15% citation frequency. (2) Citation position -- where in the AI response your citation appears. First citation carries more weight than fifth citation, similar to how position 1 carries more weight than position 10 in traditional SEO. Weight: 1st citation = 1.0, 2nd = 0.8, 3rd = 0.6, 4th+ = 0.4. (3) Query importance weight -- not all queries are equal. Weight by estimated search volume or business value. A query with 10K monthly volume should count more than one with 100. Composite GEO score formula: Sum of (citation_present x position_weight x volume_weight) / Sum of (volume_weight). This produces a score between 0 and 1, where 1.0 means cited as the first source for every target query. Data collection via Scavio: query target keywords with ai_overview enabled ($0.005/query). Parse the AI Overview text for your domain or brand mentions. Record citation presence and position. Run weekly to track score changes. 100 keywords weekly = $0.50/week = $2/month for GEO visibility tracking. Limitations: GEO scores are directional, not precise. AI responses vary by user session, location, and time. Weekly averages smooth out this variance but cannot eliminate it entirely.
Example Usage
A SaaS company tracks GEO visibility for 50 product-category keywords weekly via Scavio ($0.25/week). Initial GEO score: 0.08 (cited in 4/50 queries, mostly as 3rd-4th source). After 3 months of freshness updates and structured data improvements, GEO score reached 0.22 (cited in 11/50 queries, including 3 as first source). The score increase correlated with a 15% increase in organic traffic from AI Mode referrals.
