Definition
The correlation between content recency (last-updated dates, verified timestamps, current data) and the likelihood of that content being cited as a source in AI-generated responses from Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity.
In Depth
AI models cite fresh content preferentially. When two pages cover the same topic with similar quality, the one with a more recent update date gets cited. This is not a minor ranking signal: in competitive categories, freshness is often the deciding factor between being cited and being invisible. Freshness signals that matter: (1) Last-updated date -- a visible 'Last updated: May 2026' on the page. Must reflect a genuine content update, not a cosmetic date change. Google's systems can detect date manipulation. (2) Verified data timestamps -- 'Pricing verified as of May 20, 2026' on comparison data points. Shows the information is current, not copied from an older source. (3) Version history -- pages that show update history ('Updated pricing in May 2026, added new competitor in April 2026') demonstrate ongoing maintenance. (4) Current year references -- content that references '2026' pricing, features, or events signals currency over content stuck in '2024' framing. Update frequency sweet spot: for most content types, monthly updates maintain citation eligibility. For pricing and comparison content, quarterly updates are the minimum. For rapidly changing topics (AI tools, crypto), weekly updates may be necessary. Automating freshness with search APIs: use Scavio ($0.005/query) to verify competitor pricing and feature claims monthly. Query competitor pricing pages, extract current pricing, and update your comparison pages if changes are detected. This creates genuinely fresh content (not just date bumps) at minimal cost: 20 competitor pricing checks = $0.10/mo. Measuring freshness impact: track AI Overview citations before and after updating content. Use a GEO citation scanner to query target keywords weekly. Pages updated within the last 30 days appear in citations at roughly 2-3x the rate of pages last updated 90+ days ago, based on observable patterns in 2026 SERP data.
Example Usage
The team set up monthly content freshness checks: Scavio queries for 20 competitor pricing pages ($0.10/mo), LLM comparison of current vs stored pricing, automated alerts when pricing changes are detected. Pages updated within 7 days of detected competitor pricing changes maintained AI Overview citations, while pages left stale for 60+ days lost citations to fresher competitor content.
