LLM-based lead scoring replaces the rule engine with a prompt that describes the ideal customer profile in natural language and asks the model to score and explain its reasoning. The prompt might say: 'Score this lead 1-100 based on: company uses AI/ML tools, has 50-500 employees, is in B2B SaaS, and shows active hiring for engineering roles.' The key to making prompt-based lead scoring reliable is grounding: instead of relying on the LLM's parametric knowledge about the company, you feed it fresh data from search APIs. A Scavio Google SERP query for the company name returns their website description, recent news, and knowledge graph data. A LinkedIn or job board search reveals current hiring patterns. Reddit mentions reveal community sentiment. The LLM scores based on this real, current data rather than potentially outdated training knowledge. The honest limitation: LLM-based scoring is less deterministic than rule-based scoring. The same lead might get slightly different scores across runs. Teams handle this by running scoring 2-3 times and averaging, or by using the LLM to classify into buckets (hot/warm/cold) rather than assigning precise numeric scores.
