Is There a Stable Way to Pull YouTube Transcripts? Here Is One That Holds Up in Production

Yes. Scavio's YouTube transcript API answered all 20 test videos in a median 2.1 seconds and names the languages a video has when yours is missing. 5 credits.

Transcripts / Reliability
YouTube

Yes. The stable way to pull YouTube transcripts in production is to stop fetching them from your own servers and call a hosted transcript API. Scavio's POST /api/v1/youtube/transcript takes a video id or URL and returns the transcript as plain text or timed SRT in one synchronous call; on October 27, 2026 it answered all 20 videos we sent, 19 with English text in a median of 2.1 seconds and one with the list of languages it did have. A transcript costs 5 credits, about $0.01 on the Growth plan billed yearly.

The question keeps coming up. A developer on r/sideprojects building a content research tool found that the youtube-transcript-api library ran fine locally but hit "random failures, occasional blocks" in production, and asked whether to self-host, wrap the library or pay for an API, and whether transcript availability is consistent enough to build a feature on. On r/SideProject, which ranks second on Google for YouTube transcript API threads, another developer asked for a consistent transcript API and offered to pay. Both questions have a measurable answer.

Why it works locally and breaks in production

The library itself explains it. Its README says YouTube "has started blocking most IPs that are known to belong to cloud providers", that code deployed to AWS, Google Cloud or Azure will likely hit RequestBlocked or IpBlocked exceptions, and that rotating residential proxies are the most reliable fix. Retry logic does not help when the block is on your server's address. YouTube's own Data API is no way out either: its captions.download method only works on videos you have permission to edit.

Step 1: Fetch the transcript through an API

Bash
curl -s https://api.scavio.dev/api/v1/youtube/transcript \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SCAVIO_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"video_id": "T-D1OfcDW1M"}'

The response, as captured with content trimmed:

JSON
{
  "data": {
    "video_id": "T-D1OfcDW1M",
    "language_code": "en",
    "language_name": "English",
    "format": "txt",
    "content": "Large language models. They are everywhere. They get some things amazingly right and other things very interestingly wrong. My name is Marina Danilevsky..."
  },
  "response_time": 1813,
  "credits_used": 5
}

That was 1,062 words for a 6-minute-36-second IBM Technology video. Your server only talks to api.scavio.dev, so its IP address never reaches YouTube. video_id also accepts watch, Shorts, youtu.be and embed URLs, and "format": "srt" returns timed cues instead.

Step 2: Treat a missing language as an answer, not a failure

Part of the "flakiness" people see is videos that return nothing. Usually the video has a transcript, just not in the language you asked for. When we requested English on a Hindi-only lecture, the API said so:

JSON
{
  "video_id": "Ty8gcCKuwNI",
  "language_code": "en",
  "content": null,
  "available_languages": ["hi"],
  "message": "No English transcript for this video. Available languages: hi."
}

A retry with "language": "hi" returned the transcript, 3,771 words. In your code, a null content with available_languages is a final answer for that language: either retry once with a listed language or mark the video as unavailable in yours. Retry with backoff only on HTTP errors such as a 429 or a 5xx.

Is availability consistent enough to build on?

On our sample, yes. We pulled the transcript of all 20 results of a YouTube search for "retrieval augmented generation explained": 19 had English, the 20th had Hindi, and none failed. The 2-hour-33-minute freeCodeCamp course came back in 2.6 seconds, the median call took 2.1 seconds and the slowest 6.5. Auto-generated captions also arrive quickly: four videos uploaded 4 to 11 minutes before we checked already listed an auto-generated track on /api/v1/youtube/video. The full set of calls and a chart of transcript size against video length is in the best YouTube transcript APIs for RAG.

What to plan for

  • Billing on misses: a call for a language the video lacks still costs 5 credits. Read the caption tracks from /api/v1/youtube/video (1 credit) first if you index many languages.
  • Timeouts: most calls finish in 1.5 to 3 seconds, but set a client timeout of at least 30 seconds; Scavio's docs say videos without captions are transcribed from their audio, which takes longer.
  • Videos with no speech: an SRT request for a video with no speech returns content null with the message "No speech detected in this video."
  • Cost: 1,000 transcripts a month is 5,000 credits, $10 on the Growth plan billed yearly, or within the 7,000 credits of the $30 monthly Project plan.

Frequently asked questions

Why does youtube-transcript-api work locally but fail on my server?

Because of where the request comes from. The library's README says YouTube has started blocking most IPs known to belong to cloud providers such as AWS, Google Cloud and Azure, so deployed code hits RequestBlocked or IpBlocked errors that rarely appear on a home connection. The README recommends rotating residential proxies; a hosted transcript API avoids the problem by making the request on its own side.

Do all YouTube videos have transcripts?

Most spoken videos do, because YouTube generates captions automatically. In our sample of 20 search results, 19 had an English track and 1 had only Hindi, and four videos uploaded 4 to 11 minutes before we checked already listed an auto-generated track. Videos with no speech have nothing to transcribe.

How do I fetch YouTube transcripts without getting blocked?

Call a hosted API instead of fetching from your own server. With Scavio you POST a video id to /api/v1/youtube/transcript with your API key and get the transcript back as text or SRT; your server only ever talks to api.scavio.dev, so its IP address is never in front of YouTube.

How much does a reliable YouTube transcript API cost?

Scavio charges 5 credits a transcript, $10 per 1,000 on the Growth plan billed yearly, with 50 free credits on signup. Scrapingdog, TranscriptAPI and Supadata get down to $1.00 to $1.57 per 1,000 on their larger published plans, and SerpApi is $10 per 1,000 on Production; the full comparison is in our roundup of YouTube transcript APIs.
